The number of DUI convictions in St Petersburg and Pinellas County has been declining each year since 2002. In 2005 there were 2,874 convictions for driving under the influence but that number fell by 508 just a few years later as the county saw 2,366 convictions in 2007. That was a drop of nearly 18% but the biggest decline in a single year came from 2006 to 2007 when DUI convictions were off by 14%. This has been the trend in Pinellas as DUI convictions are down 41% in a five-year span.
While DUI convictions are down in Pinellas, the amount of cases that result in a not guilty finding or that are dismissed have been shrinking each year since 2003. In just the last five years the number of not guilty findings in DUI arrests in Pinellas has dropped by more than 57%. In 2003 28 cases ended with a not guilty in 2007 that number had fallen to 12. The drop is dismissals have been even more dramatic. The number of DUI cases that have been dismissed dropped by 80% from 61 in 2003 to just 12 in 2007.
From 2003-2007, Pinellas County did have the highest percentage of not guilty verdicts in the Tampa Bay area. The number of DUI cases that ended with a not guilty were the highest in Pinellas as compared to Hillsborough and Polk.
